AVG Rating: 3.0/10

When you buy health products, you need to make sure not only that they’re safe and full of choice ingredients, but that they have what you’re looking for. We came across a shake recently that comes from a reputable company, but which may not be the right choices for everyone. Let’s take a look at what this shake has to offer, and why (in some ways) there are better choices out there.

Check out our brand-new list of the Top 10 best meal replacement shakes.

Ensure Plus Overview

Ensure Plus is a nutritional shake that’s intended primarily as a meal replacement. People who have no time to make themselves balanced meals make use of meal replacements shakes, as well as people who are on diets and want to lose weight by having filling shakes stand in place of full meals, so that they can control their calorie intake. Ensure Plus seems to be intended mostly for people who are undernourished, such as hospital patients, and who need to ingest more food but are having trouble with solid food.

Ensure Plus is made by Abbot Nutrition, a healthcare product company that’s been in business for decades. They’re known for their usage and recommendations among doctors, but not as much among fitness and health types.

Ensure Plus Claims

Ensure Plus is supposed to give you the nutrition you need, not only in the form of vitamins and minerals, but also for protein and carbohydrates. By drinking Ensure once or twice a day, people are supposed to see a healthy gain in weight and more energy. More stamina and activity is also promised. Since the product is gluten-free, people with celiac are supposed to be able to use it, and since it’s considered suitable for people who are lactose intolerant, it considers even more allergies as well.

Ensure is supposed to taste great, and to be a cost-effective way to get the calories and nutrition you need, at around $1 per serving.

Ensure Plus Ingredients

Ensure Plus has a huge list of ingredients, something that we often see with meal replacement shakes. Here’s a partial list of some of the most important ones:

  • Corn Maltodextrin
  • Milk Protein
  • Soy Protein
  • Cellulose Gel
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Biotin
  • Thiamine
  • Nonfat Milk
  • Copper Sulfate
  • Carrageenan
  • Sugar

Milk protein is one of the most common sources of protein in meal replacement shakes, providing a cost-effective way to get a concentrated amount of protein in a product. Thiamine and biotin are  good sources of vitamins. The shake contains between 25%-60% of the average adult’s daily value of vitamins and minerals, something which definitely counts in its favor.

Not all of the ingredients impress us, however. Soy protein and soy lecithin have been added, but having this much soy product in this shake is going to cause problems for people who are sensitive (or allergic) to it. We also noticed that there’s a lot of sugar in it, about 20g per serving – that’s huge, especially for a shake that’s supposed to be healthy.

We’ve found that these are the best nutritional shakes you can buy.

The Science Behind Ensure Plus

The idea with Ensure Plus is to stuff each serving with vitamins, minerals, protein, sugar, and calories – everything you would expect from a meal, but just in shake form. Protein is supposed to help the person stay sated longer, so that they’re not hungry again too quickly, and the vitamins and minerals are supposed to keep the body healthy and energetic. Ensure Plus hasn’t provided any documentation, just a lot of claims on their website, so we’ve had to glean what we can from the ingredients.

One thing we noticed is that there are lots of calories per serving, 350 calories to be exact. This further makes the case that Ensure Plus is mainly for people who are trying to actively gain weight, particularly patients who can’t eat solid food or who have a poor diet and need to get healthy again.

Word on the Street About Ensure Plus

Ensure Plus is sold many places, and it has a lot of good reviews – from people who have poor appetites, are recovering from surgeries or operations, or are ill. That said, even among these people, there are a lot of negative reactions people have had with it.

The main poor reaction we’ve seen is their physical reaction to the product itself. It’s either “far too sweet,” as one customer put it (keep in mind it’s 20g of sugar per serving!) or “gives you terrible gas and bloating after taking it” – a reaction we saw from several people.

Other people complain about the taste, and that it’s “not as good as it used to be.” It’s likely that the company changed the formula recently.

Is Ensure Plus Worth Trying?

Well, it really depends on the type of person you are. Most people who are looking for a meal replacement shake for losing weight probably aren’t going to go for a shake that has 350 calories per bottle. That’s just going against the whole point! Instead, if you’re someone who has a serious illness and needs to keep up their health despite a weak appetite, Ensure Plus might be for you. Even then, though, it contains lots of sugar, too much for some people – 25g is the recommended daily amount for an adult, and Ensure Plus contains 20g.

So if you’re looking for an easy, healthy meal replacement shake that won’t give you bloating or be too sweet, this product isn’t for you. It would be best to try elsewhere.

Ensure Plus vs Ensure

There are only subtle differences between these two products. Ensure Plus and Ensure both contain protein, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients you need to keep your body healthy. Ensure (original) only contains 9g of protein and 220 calories per bottle, while Ensure Plus contains 13 grams of protein and has 350 calories.

Ensure Plus contains more Vitamin D, C, and E, but other than that the ingredients of both are roughly equivalent.

Ensure Plus vs Ensure Enlive

Again, both of these products are nearly identical, as they come from the same company and contain almost the same ingredients. The main difference, it seems is that they just contain different percentages and amounts of the ingredients. Ensure Plus has 13g of protein and Ensure Enlive has a stunning 20g. Ensure Enlive also has more Vitamins C, D, and E than Ensure Plus. The main difference is who they’re intended for, which is entirely up to the doctor.

Ensure Plus vs Soylent

These shakes are very different, despite both being meant for meal replacement. Ensure Plus is meant primarily for people who are ill or have gone through surgery and don’t have a big enough diet to stomach full meals, offering a way to quickly get them nutrition. Soylent is a meal replacement shake meant for everyday people who don’t want to take the time to make themselves proper meals. Soylent contains more calories than Ensure Plus. Both contain vitamins, minerals, and soy protein.
