Losing weight isn’t always easy, and supplement companies know that. That’s why they’re always quick to offer you a “miracle” pill that will make you look the way you want to look – and that’s why you need to be careful. Not all of these pills are safe, and some of them could even be dangerous. That’s why we were shocked when we checked out the facts behind one of the most talked-about diet pills out there.

Dexatrim Overview
Dexatrim (or Dexatrim Max Complete 7) is a weight loss supplement that’s supposed to help you shed extra pounds. It’s mainly an herbal supplement, with vitamins and caffeine included. It goes for $23.99 (on sale) at its main website, but it can be found for as much as $50 some places. It’s meant to be taken at a rate of two pills per morning, and as each bottle contains 60 capsules, each bottle lasts about a month. There are no clues as to how long you’re supposed to take the pills, but it can be assumed that you take it as long until you see the results you want.
Dexatrim is made by NVE Pharmaceuticals, a nutritional supplement brand with a shady history. In 2024 they were slapped with a warning and an injunction from the FDA, after one of their facilities was inspected and they were found to be selling products without listing all the ingredients in them, with others being misbranded and without necessary legal information. In 2004, the company was accused of selling diet pills with ephedrine in them, a banned substance that leads to heart attacks.

Dexatrim Claims
Dexatrim’s claims are pretty simple. They’re supposed to help block hunger, something which is supposed to be beneficial for people on a diet, as it will prevent them from wanting to eat more than they should. The pills are also supposed to convert body fat “into fuel” – we’re not sure what that means scientifically, but it’s probable that they mean it will specifically burn away your existing body fat.

Dexatrim Ingredients
Dexatrim has a small list of ingredients. Below is a partial list:
- Green Tea Leaf Extract
- Caffeine
- Oolong Tea Leaf Extract
- Panax Ginseng
- 7-Keto (3-acetyl-7-oxo dhydroepiandrosterone) (DHEA)
- Thiamine
- Riboflavin
- Vitamin B 12
Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it can help you shed excess water weight, and give you energy to work out more. Vitamin B 12 is linked to better metabolic processes, and has been linked to energy levels as well. Panax Ginseng is an herb that’s been tested on athletes as a way to increase stamina and reduce muscle recovery time after workouts.
Green tea leaf extract is a decent source of antioxidants, and there are those who claim that it has weight loss benefits – but where’s the proof? We couldn’t find any, instead coming across a paper (Astrup, A, et al: “The effect and safety…” Int J Obes, 1992) that found green tea to be no better at promoting weight loss than a placebo. DHEA is a hormone that is supposed to help physical activity (as it’s related to testosterone). It’s also been banned by several entities, like the Olympics and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Science Behind Dexatrim
Dexatrim’s science is here and there. On the one hand, proper vitamins give your body the energy and building blocks it needs to carry out its normal functions, which could help with weight loss. Caffeine will definitely give you energy, but possibly at the cost of heart palpitations, anxiety, and insomnia.
DHEA is a hormone that can help with being more active and exercising, but there’s a problem here: we don’t know how much DHEA is in the supplement, and since more than 50-100mg over a long period of time can be “unsafe” (WebMD), Dexatrim has us worried.

Word on the Street About Dexatrim
Dexatrim has a lot of user reviews – and not all of them are good. We’ve found some people glowing about how it “works great at suppressing the appetite” and that some have “lost some serious weight while on these pills.” Many, however, are unimpressed.
“It’s a dud” we saw one user say, with others going on to say it made them “feel anxious and jittery” and “hurt my sleep pattern” – probably due to all that caffeine. Others said it “didn’t stop my food cravings” and “hurt my stomach.”
These are the most critically-acclaimed nutritional weight loss pills.
Is Dexatrim Worth Trying?
This isn’t a pill we’d suggest anyone take. Not only does the company that makes it have a shady past with regards to secret ingredients, illegal substances, injunctions, and lawsuits, but the product itself contains some ingredients that aren’t just worthless from a fat-loss standpoint, but could possibly cause side effects like jitteriness, upset stomach, and insomnia.
Even worse, many customers (30%) whose reviews we read said that the product didn’t work as advertised and gave them some uncomfortable side effects that made them not want to take it any more.
Given all this, we’d say move on. There are better products out there.

Dexatrim vs Hydroxycut
Both of these products claim to do the same main thing: make you lose weight quicker. Dexatrim claims to suppress the appetite, however, while Hydroxycut claims to make you more energetic. Both contain lots of caffeine, but Dexatrim contains more vitamins. Dexatrim advises taking two pills daily, while Hydroxycut claims that doses will vary with the customer, and so advise people to try taking only one a day at first, then moving to two if they need to (possibly making Hydroxycut last longer). Both cost about the same (around $20).
Dexatrim vs Phentermine
These are very different products. While Dexatrim is a natural weight loss pill, made of herbal extracts and vitamin supplements, Phentermine is a drug that’s supposed to promote weight loss. Dexatrim works a little more “naturally,” containing things like caffeine and DHEA that stimulate the body, while Phentermine is an amphetamine that prevents hunger at the chemical level. The side effects are also different levels of intensity: while Dexatrim’s side effects can include insomnia or jitteriness, Phentermine can cause pulmonary hypertension, hallucinations, and vomiting.
Dexatrim vs Slimquick
These are similar products. Both are herbally-derived pills that are supposed to be effective at promoting weight loss. They both claim to decrease the appetite, but Slimquick promises to increase the metabolism as well. They both contain caffeine and green tea extract, but Dexatrim contains vitamins supplements while Slimquick contains only herbal ingredients.
