Slimfast Review (UPDATED 2024) – Is It Safe?

AVG Rating: 8.5/10

Slimfast is a widely known brand of shakes, bars, and more made to be used as weight loss tools. The SlimFast diet consists of replacing one or two meals each day with the shakes, while the bars help fill in the blanks between meals.

Ultimately, the purpose of following the SlimFast diet is to help users track calories easily–skipping the need to look at points or count carbs during the day.

Slimfast Overview

As we mentioned, SlimFast has created the SlimFast Plan, which replaces two meals a day with the brand’s Advanced Nutrition Shakes. On top of the shakes, dieters can supplement with up to three low-calorie SlimFast snacks and one meal of your choice. If you need some guidance in choosing an appropriate meal, the site offers plenty of recipes you can work from.

The meal replacement shakes come in a variety of flavors, and you can choose to buy in bulk powder or ready-to-drink bottles. Open up the Amazon channel, and you’ll see a whole page of products–including advanced protein bars, 100-calorie packs of cookies and chips, and more.

Slimfast meal recommendations include filling half of your plate up with vegetables, a quarter of your plate with a lean protein, and the remaining part with a starch like brown rice or potatoes. It’s pretty straightforward, and so long as you follow these basic guidelines and don’t go crazy with sugary sauces or condiments, you’re in the clear.

What’s interesting about the SlimFast plan is, it doesn’t seem all that healthy. For example, users can expect to reduce calories by following the simple directions included in on the website. But, 100-calorie packs of things like cheese chips or cookies seem wholly unnecessary. You’re already basing the bulk of your diet on processed foods with the shakes and the bars, so why add chips, outside of the occasional treat?

It would make more sense if SlimFast promoted eating carrot sticks and celery, nuts, and fruit–not cookies, but we get that they’re there to make more sales.

Slimfast Claims

The Slimfast site boasts a range of products–aimed at helping users easily keep tabs on how many calories they’re consuming on a regular basis. The company makes bars and these snack packs that supplement the shake-based diet.

Slimfast shakes are made to provide the body with the nutrients needed to replace up to two meals a day. The remaining meal, per the experts at Slimfast, should be composed of nutritious food like lean protein and vegetables.

Indeed, drinking shakes may help users lose weight. But, there doesn’t seem to be much regarding nutritional value in each shake. It’s a means of delivering some calories and protein to the user with minimal effort but still doesn’t provide the nutrition you’d find in the average meal.

Slimfast Ingredients

Slimfast shakes are made primarily from low-fat milk, plus some added vitamins, minerals, and protein. In all, we weren’t especially impressed with the quality of the ingredients included in this formulation—especially the sugar content. Here, we’ll take a look at the key ingredients found in the Slimfast formula.

  • Low-fat milk
  • Sugar
  • Cocoa
  • Fructose
  • Calcium caseinate
  • Carageenan
  • Isolated soy protein
  • Sucralose
  • Artificial flavor

The Slimfast shakes are made from a base of fat-free milk, which is supplemented with isolated soy protein and fortified vitamins and minerals.

Slimfast contains 19 grams of sugar—which is pretty high. The company promotes the use of these shakes as a meal replacement, but replacing two meals a day with the ready-to-drink product means you’ll be getting 38 grams of sugar per day.

The American Heart Association recommends that men consume no more than 36 grams of sugar, while the daily allotment for women is much lower at 25 grams. Because this product seems to be marketed toward women, it seems irresponsible to call this a healthy weight loss tool.

These shakes contain some ingredients we weren’t too pleased to see. Carageenan, for example, is a thickening agent sourced from a red seaweed. Some people believe this ingredient can cause cancer, though the FDA has deemed it safe. Products that contain carrageenan are often labeled as “natural,” but some studies have shown that the ingredient has been linked to food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, glucose intolerance, bloating, inflammation, and potentially, colon cancer.

The Science Behind Slimfast

According to the Slimfast website, the shakes are a healthy meal replacement option for people who need some help keeping track of calories. WebMD, for example, does state that Slimfast might help people lose weight, but only because replacing meals with these products means most people will be eating considerably less than they normally would.

In looking at the nutritional profile, it’s clear that the healthiest element in the mix is the non-fat milk—an ingredient that can be mixed with far healthier diet shakes.

We wish this product contained some more nutritious components like fruits and vegetables, fiber, or probiotics—instead, you’re getting two types of sugar, an artificial sweetener, and a potentially harmful thickening agent combined with processed soy protein.

In all, there are plenty of other options on the market—ones that provide users with the nutrition needed to support weight loss.

Is Slimfast Worth a Try?

This diet works well for weight loss, in the sense that you’re cutting out calories. However–it’s not especially healthy. If you’re looking at the ingredients list, you’ll notice right off the bat that this product is essentially milk with a bit of protein and other elements added into the mix.

Calorie restriction through the use of a meal replacement shake is a sure way to lose weight, but we don’t see the Slimfast plan as a sustainable means of keeping the weight off. It’s a pretty restrictive diet–not in the sense of wiping out carbs or sugar, rather, in the sense that you’ll be eating a lot of packaged food not exactly known for its nutritional value.

That said, the shakes are easy to find and affordable for most people. But, we fail to see the benefits of choosing the protein shake over the myriad protein bars on the market or some of the more nutritious competing shakes available online and in stores.
