Atkins Shake Overview

Atkins Shake are widely available, popularized by the well-known Atkins diet brand. The shakes, which contain 230 calories apiece were designed to support the body while on this carb-restrictive diet.

The drink comes with 23 grams of protein, 1 gram of fiber, and just 1 gram of sugar. Protein comes from a mix of real dairy and plant-based soy protein isolate (more on that later), and users can purchase the shake in a number of flavors: strawberry, milk or dark chocolate, cookies n’ creme, chocolate banana, caramel latte, and more.

Now, the Atkins diet is based off of eating low-carb whole food items, but the brand makes a range of things like the shakes, trail mixes, and bars that keep you full without adding much sugar or carbohydrates into the mix.

Atkins Shake Claims

Atkins Shake doesn’t come with many claims attached. The idea is that the shakes are one tool that may help users stay the course while going through the Atkins diet. Normally, the diet consists of eating lots of fat and protein and limiting carbs from between 20 and 90 grams per day.

The amount of carbs allotted per day corresponds with what stage you’re at in the program. The Atkins Diet has been around since the 1970s and a low-carb diet like this one has been shown to be an effective weight loss tool for many people.

Atkins Shake exists to fill in the gaps when you can’t prepare a salad or a chicken breast. Instead, users are presented with a convenient solution they can enjoy on the go or in between meals. While the 180 calorie shakes may help some users achieve their weight loss goals, replacing multiple meals with this option is a different type of diet.

There isn’t any research that shows whether or not this is a good meal replacement tool for that supports long term weight loss and maintenance. But, like anything that makes it easy to track caloric intake, you can take matters into your own hands.

Atkins Shake Ingredients

Ingredients vary by flavor and size. Most shakes contain between 15 and 18 grams of protein and 160-180 calories, while the large size is a little more substantial. That said all shakes contain the same dairy protein blend, soy protein isolate, and a collection of vitamins and minerals present to supplement your nutritional needs:

  • Dairy protein blend
  • Sunflower oil
  • Soy protein isolate
  • Cellulose gel
  • Cellulose gum
  • Sucralose
  • Carageenan
  • Artificial colors and flavors

The first ingredient in this mix is a dairy protein blend—it’s a mix of protein powder as well as whey protein isolate. Whey protein is a key ingredient used for muscle building and fat loss and one of our expert-recommended ingredients for weight loss shakes.

We’re not sure why after Atkins touted this shake for its real dairy content that they’ve added soy protein isolate.

While fermented soy is generally considered healthy (tofu, tempeh, etc.), this form of soy consists of isolated protein—which comes along with a higher isoflavone content than things like tofu. High concentrations of isoflavones may have an effect on estrogen levels in the body.

Acefultame potassium and sucralose are both artificial sweeteners that do not contain any calories. The benefit is, this helps keep this product within the bounds of the Atkins Diet, but they may have other effects. Unfortunately, sucralose may have an adverse effect on blood sugar.

Carageenan, a thickener sourced from red seaweed, is another problematic ingredient. According to a study published in the Cancer Letters Journal this ingredient caused lab mice to grow tumors. Not that much is known about this ingredient, but there is some question as to whether or not it is safe in the long term.

The Science Behind Atkins Shake

The shakes are low carb and contain a fair amount of protein. So, to that end, they certainly live up to their claims. We’re not totally sold on this formula, though. It’s really loaded with artificial ingredients—for example, there’s no real reason to add red and blue dye to the formula. Or opt for sucralose over the plant-based stevia.

But, the product didn’t make too many claims—there’s nothing saying drinking these shakes will make you lose weight or increase energy, like we see with other products, it’s just a convenient source of protein.

Our recommendation is to read the label and figure out whether all these additives are worth the convenience. We don’t know too much about how artificial sweeteners can affect health in the long  run, so best to tread carefully here and use the Atkins Shake sparingly.

Word on the Street about Atkins Shake

The Atkins Shake is pretty well-reviewed. It falls into the category of being a tasty, low-carb option, but there are a lot of artificial ingredients in the mix.

That said, it doesn’t seem like the people who buy this product are super concerned about the ingredient profile used to achieve these goals. Soy protein might not be the right fit for everyone trying to lose weight, as soy might interfere with hormone levels, increasing estrogen with use.

The product has a decent amount of protein and is fortified with vitamins. All ingredients are still approved by the FDA and this product is widely available—it’s also worth noting that this shake is just one of the products made by the Atkins brand, not necessarily a diet in and of itself.

Is Atkins Shake Worth a Try?

Atkins Shake is made by a longstanding, reputable brand. It’s affordable and according to most of the reviews, it’s affordable.

But, it’s not necessarily chock full of healthy ingredients. We see a lot of shakes that are soy-free or contain superfood ingredients, like sea vegetables and antioxidant-rich fruit powders.

This product, well, it’s got protein going for it.

As a weight loss tool, the Atkins Shake is unlikely to keep you full for hours to come. The single gram of fiber means you’re not getting the substance one might expect from such a product. Perhaps adding elements like apples or oatmeal could supplement the missing fiber, but that may fall out of the Atkins plan—and customers following the diet may want to stick with recommended foods.

Overall, this product was well-received by consumers, saying it worked well with their low-carb diet regimen and that the taste (excepting the vanilla) was mostly pleasant. Some consumers did feel that the product was slightly artificial, but that it was a decent pick as far as convenience was concerned.

Atkins Shake FAQs

  1. Where can you buy this item?
Atkins Shakes may be purchased from the official Atkins website, alongside the bars and packets of trail mix the company makes to supplement the whole-food based plan it promotes.
Shoppers may also find this in their local supermarkets, as well as in Walmart or Target. Online, shoppers can find this product on Amazon, Jet and more.
  2. How much does Atkins Shake Cost?
On the website, a 4-count box sells for $7.19. It’s currently offered at a slightly lower price. Shoppers may also choose from a variety of bundles, which feature the full spectrum of Atkins-approved snack foods like bars, trail mix, more. A 17-item bundle retails for $118.59.
Amazon pricing varies by flavor and case-pack. The site features a 12-count chocolate pack for $17.64, while the French vanilla is $24.41 for the same amount. Regular price is $28.
  3. What is the intended use?
Again, this product functions primarily as a snack or a grab-and-go breakfast or lunch replacement. While the Atkins diet itself is geared toward weight loss, the actual program doesn’t promote the use of the shakes as a big portion of the diet—rather a way to stay on track when you’re low on time or energy.
