There are lots of diet shakes out there, but not all of them are meant for everyone. Some are for casual dieters, some are for weight lifters and athletes, and so on. You need to make sure that you’re using the product that’s right for you. We heard about a nutritional shake recently that comes from a famous brand, but upon further inspection, it might not be the shake that you need. Read on for more information.

Ensure Clear Overview
Ensure Clear is a nutritional drink from Ensure, a brand that manufactures nutritional drinks and supplements. It comes in two flavors, Blueberry Pomegranate and Mixed Fruit. It’s fat free, and is meant to be taken by those who need to “fill [their] nutritional gaps.” It contains 8g of protein, 180 calories, and no fat. On the other hand, it’s a little low in vitamins and minerals.
Ensure is made by Abbot Nutrition, a pharmaceutical company based in Ohio. They manufacture all sorts of nutritional products, from drinks and shakes to powders and bars. They aren’t really known as a fitness or diet brand – instead, their products seem mainly intended for children, the elderly, or for people who are recovering from surgery and can’t eat solid food. Something to keep in mind when deciding if their products are right for you.

Ensure Clear Claims
Ensure Clear doesn’t make a lot of claims on their main website. They claim that the drink is the “#1 doctor-recommended brand” for nutritional drinks. As stated above, it says that the drink is meant to fill the “gaps” in your nutrition, not necessarily as a meal-replacement shake like most others claim to be. They also claim on their main page that the shake is not nutritionally-balanced, something that you should definitely keep note of. As far as we can put together, it seems to be a protein shake that contains some vitamins and minerals, but with no fat, so it’s not meant to be something that can take the place of a meal.

Ensure Clear Ingredients
Ensure Clear has a somewhat small list of ingredients, some of which are listed below:
- Whey protein isolate
- Niacinimide
- Manganese Sulfate
- Sucralose
- Corn Maltodextrin
- Sugar
- Blue 1
Whey protein isolate is a common source of protein in many protein and nutritional shakes, made from whey, a component of milk. Niacinimide is a key source of niacin, a B vitamin necessary for many bodily processes, but especially for promoting circulation – something very important when it comes to dieting and staying active. Manganese sulfate is a source of manganese, an important mineral that promotes enzyme production and has anti-oxidant properties.
There are some ingredients in this shake that we’re not so hot on. Mainly, we object to the inclusion of sucralose, an artificial sweetener. 1,000 times sweeter than normal sugar, it’s usually included in products that make no claim to being all-natural. It’s been associated with a number of negative health effects, like an increase in weight and a reduction in digestive flora (Journal of Toxicology, 2024).
These are the best nutritional shakes on the market, based on critical reception.
The Science Behind Ensure Clear
Ensure Clear is basically supposed to give you protein and a couple of vitamins in each bottle. With the low fat content, it’s possible that it’s meant specifically as a way for people who can’t tolerate fat (for example, those with acute pancreatitis) to still get some nutrition in between meals, or right after surgery. They don’t say that it’s intended for people just trying to lose weight or to have a healthy nutritional shake on the go, and for good reason: with no fat, no fiber, and only 6g of protein, it isn’t guaranteed to fill you up or keep you healthy.

Word on the Street About Ensure Clear
There aren’t many reviews for Ensure Clear, but we managed to track some down on the main website. The reviews there are really split.
Some people think the product is great, saying that “it tastes good” and “it’s a great way to get protein.” These reviews are in a minority, though – the majority of reviews on the website are 3 or fewer stars out of 5.
People claim that it “tastes artificial” and “the color is awful – not clear!” We’ve seen mention on other sites that the “price is outrageously expensive” with others chiming in to say that it’s “not worth the price.”
These are the most critically-acclaimed nutritional shakes for meal replacement and fitness.
Is Ensure Clear Worth Trying?
This really isn’t a great choice for anyone seeking a nutritional drink – unless you’re literally recovering from surgery or can’t eat anything with fat in it. For most people, however, those who need a balanced nutritional shake to work into their workout routines or lose weight with, this isn’t a good solution. Not only does it contain few vitamins (17, as opposed to 25 like most) and little protein (only 8g), but it contains artificial sweeteners and colors that you definitely don’t need to be putting into your body.
Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, avoid Ensure Clear.

Ensure Clear vs Enlive
These are very similar products. Both are from Ensure, the nutritional supplement company. Ensure Clear is comparatively low in nutritional value, with only 8g of protein and only a handful of vitamins and minerals. Enlive on the other hand has 20g of protein, 26 vitamins and minerals, and 3g of fiber. Ensure Clear contains sucralose, an artificial sweetener. On the other hand, Enlive contains straight sugar, with no indication that it comes from an artificial source. Enlive appears to be more for overall health, while Clear is a quick fat-free protein source.
Ensure Clear vs Ensure Plus
Again, we’ve got two products from the same company. They’re not intended for the same audiences, however. Ensure Clear is meant for people with low fat tolerance, as it contains no fats at all in it, while Ensure Plus is a more balanced way to get nutrition, with a decent amount of fat, plus fiber and protein. Ensure Clear contains the artificial sweetener sucralose (on top of regular sugar) while Ensure Plus contains regular sugar. Ensure Plus contains soy products, which Ensure Clear doesn’t.
Ensure Clear vs Boost Breeze
These are pretty similar products, actually. Both are fruit-flavored nutritional drinks that are clear, meant for people who are required to have a clear diet for medical reasons. Both also contain no fat, for people who can’t tolerate fat due to medical conditions. Both contain whey protein, sugar, and corn products, as well as vitamins. Boost Breeze contains more vitamins and minerals, however, compared to Ensure Clear.
